Teaching
Leadership is easier to talk about than to do, so my classes make students do it.
I teach undergraduate and MBA courses in leadership and management at Xavier University. Students write before they talk, work through real cases, and leave with projects that look like the work they'll be asked to do.
My teaching philosophy
I want every leadership class I teach to work like a good leadership development program. Reading about leadership is useful, but people become better leaders by trying it, getting honest feedback, and trying again. So my students spend a lot of class time doing things: leader labs where they practice a skill on the spot, team projects that run all semester, and simulations where their decisions have consequences.
I also ask students to write before they talk. A few minutes of writing gives everyone a chance to think, not just the quickest voices in the room, and the discussion that follows is better for it. The frameworks we use are the ones managers actually reach for at work, so students leave with tools, not just vocabulary.
Most of all, I want students to see that leadership is not a title. It shows up in how you treat people, how consistent you are, and whether the people around you are better off for working with you. That's true for a team captain, a shift supervisor, and a CEO.
